For Innovate Like Edison

“…Innovate Like Edison is one of the outstanding books of the year…”

--The National Press Club

"Gelb and Caldicott demonstrate the timelessness of Edison's systematic approach to innovation as they guide you in applying a profoundly important concept - 'Innovation Literacy.' This book is a must-have for anyone who wants to turn creative ideas into profitable reality!"

—Dr. Vijay Govindarajan, Earl C. Daum Professor of International Business, Amos Tuck School of Business Administration, Dartmouth College, author of Ten Rules for Strategic Innovators

“Innovate Like Edison fully captures the inspiration – perspiration – and best practices required for innovation success today. This book offers you a step-by-step blueprint on how to incorporate this critical thinking into your life and business.”

—Dr. Peter H. Diamandis, Chairman and Founder, X PRIZE Foundation

"This is an urgently important book. The only competitive advantage, whatever our field of endeavor, will be our ability to innovate and this is the concrete, "how to" blueprint for putting all of us, including our nation, back on this critical path. I'm not just reading, but studying this book with my children!"

—Verne Harnish, Founder, Entrepreneurs' Organization, and CEO, Gazelles Inc., author of Mastering the Rockefeller Habits

“Edison’s innovation competencies are precisely what high tech needs today. Gelb and Caldicott have articulated the core fiber of innovation culture for companies to naturally innovate and compete. To be successful, engineering leaders and high tech managers must understand the Five Competencies of Innovation. Innovate Like Edison is required reading for executives, managers and engineers alike; and will help them break free from quarterly fiscal demands that blind one into short-term automate-the-past approaches.”

—Andrew J. Stein, Chief Marketing Officer and Geoscientist, Paradigm Geophysical, BV

“By drawing on the wealth of documents available in the Edison archive, Michael J. Gelb and Sarah Miller Caldicott have succeeded admirably in showing us how Thomas Edison operated as an ingenious inventor and a sophisticated director of Research and Development. Even more importantly, in this very readable book they take the lessons they have learned from studying Edison’s career and make them accessible to anyone looking for practical advice on the always difficult task of making Innovation work now.”

—Dr. Paul Israel, Director and General Editor of The Thomas A. Edison Papers at Rutgers University, author of Edison: A Life of Invention

“On behalf of the Association of Women in Communications, we thank you so much for being our keynote speaker at last week’s annual AWC Creative PR Olympics.

Your talk captivated our audience with a subject that was uniquely fresh and relevant in today's world. You managed to take a part of history, when worldwide communication was extremely limited, and show us how we could follow the same creative steps as Thomas Edison to attain maximum publicity for our products and services.

You took a unique perspective and showed us how the impossible became possible.  You showed us how we could learn from a historical perspective to better accomplish our communications goals today. Your talk was very thoughtful and thought provoking.”

Elaine Fitzgerald, Past President, Board Member, PR Olympics Chair,Association for Women in Communication, Atlantic-Florida Chapter

“Sarah Miller Caldicott recently delivered a stimulating 2-hour workshop to our AMA membership during our ‘Small Business Marketing Forum.’  She focused on seven techniques Thomas Edison used to catapult his small business to world-class stature.

Sarah is a tremendous educator, an engaging presenter, and her warm personality was enjoyed by the entire group.  Sarah offered us practical "how-to" information based on Edison's timeless techniques.  Every participant left the workshop with new insights relevant to our businesses today.”

“Many thanks for serving as a business resource at our December Executive Forum ‘All Members Meeting.’  As you know the mission of our Forums is to provide support to the Top Executive and your message really hit home with the attendees.

Your message to our group was in tune with our mission.  All my member CEO’s could relate to your title ‘Unstoppable Persistence.’  Persistence and staying the course is one of the traits of a great leader.  Your ideas were right on the mark.

You spoke from the heart and I especially enjoyed the history lesson.  Most successful people learned and grew from their early failures.  Your points made were well developed and made for an interesting discussion.  Everyone left thinking about how to apply what you said to their own companies.

I would also like to pass on your information to other Forum groups so they can benefit from you and your presentation.  I will also obviously be happy to refer any members or prospects to Starwave, Associates.  Keep me in the loop on your new direction.”

Mitchell R. Evans, President & CEO

Recently, I was fortunate enough to hear a presentation by Sarah Caldicott laying out the Five Competencies of Innovation, which I found most interesting and quite useful for anyone in an organization regardless of their position.  After listening to Sarah’s presentation, it became clear to me that the Five Competencies apply, not only to leaders, or what are considered to be great entrepreneurs or innovators, but to everyone in an organization of any size.

The Five Competencies provide a road map for comprehending and achieving innovation—all the way from unstoppable persistence through cultivating kaleidoscope thinking, to balancing the creative and visionary with the practical, creating high-performance collaborative teams to put the ideas to work, and then moving markets.
